Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
Coming from a lineage of construction workers in Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas, Mexico, my family brought me to Houston at the age of one. I was introduced to MECA during my high school years. I discovered my passion for dance and received invaluable support from the organization. Despite lacking formal training, MECA nurtured my talent and facilitated opportunities, propelling me towards academic and artistic success. From securing scholarships to aiding auditions, MECA’s support was pivotal in reshaping my journey.
How did you first get introduced to the arts?
The arts beckoned to me with an irresistible allure, and I chose dance as my medium of expression. In the nurturing environment of MECA, I honed my skills and embraced a holistic approach to education, recognizing the interconnectedness of all forms of artistic expression.
How did your family support you through your artistic journey?
While my family initially harbored reservations about the viability of a career in the arts, their skepticism gradually gave way to full support, thanks to the advocacy of dedicated teachers and mentors like Alice Valdez, the founder of MECA. Their belief in the transformative power of the arts reinforced my conviction to pursue my dreams wholeheartedly.
Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to pursue an artistic career?
A defining moment occurred during a second-grade talent show, where my innate talent for movement earned me a certificate for ‘Best Mover in the Class.’ However, it was upon stepping into my first formal dance class I felt a profound sense of belonging. Surrounded by fellow dancers and immersed in an environment teeming with creativity, I knew that dance was not just a passion but my true calling. This realization solidified during my time at MECA, where I found the perfect balance between artistic pursuit and academic excellence.
You spent a decade with the Dallas Black Dance Theater. What brought you back to Houston?
After ten years with the Dallas Black Dance Theatre, where I evolved from a dancer to a rehearsal director and company manager, I felt the toll of constant dancing and touring. Although I was away, my communication with MECA had never ceased, and I found myself wanting to give back to my community, so I returned to Houston. I established a dance program and curriculum at MECA as the Dance Director. Though I briefly returned to Dallas, my dedication to MECA’s mission brought me back as the Development Director at the time.
How was your transition from student to leader within the MECA organization?
The transition from student to leader was both unexpected and deeply gratifying. Guided by the visionary founder of MECA and fueled by a profound sense of responsibility, I embraced my role with excitement and humility, recognizing that I was fulfilling a destiny intertwined with the organization’s legacy of empowerment.
How would you describe MECA’s role in the Hispanic community in Houston?
I am proud to emphasize that MECA serves as a cornerstone for our community, recently recognized as a cultural treasure of Houston. Beyond its artistic offerings, MECA provides vital resources for academic success and community development. From dedicated departments focusing on academic support to providing access to social resources such as housing and medical assistance, MECA has been a steadfast support system for generations. With nearly five decades of service, MECA continues to empower individuals and families, ensuring access to opportunities and fostering unity and resilience within the Hispanic community.
What is the most fulfilling aspect of being a part of MECA?
The most fulfilling aspect of my journey with MECA lies in the opportunity to pay forward the support and guidance I received as a student. As a product of this remarkable organization, I am privileged to leave a positive imprint on the community, perpetuating a legacy of empowerment and inspiration.
What do you think is special about the Houston community?
Houston’s diversity is its greatest strength: a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and aspirations. Embracing this diversity fosters collaboration and innovation, enriching our collective experience and opening doors to endless possibilities.
Last year, Amigo Energy commissioned a mural with the tagline “No Dejes Que Nada Apague Tu Luz”. What does that phrase mean to you?
As a collaborator in crafting MECA’s tagline, “Creating a Brighter Future for Houston,” I resonate deeply with the sentiment embodied in Amigo Energy’s mural. “No dejes que nada apague to luz” reminds us to remain steadfast in our pursuit of excellence, undeterred by obstacles, and resolved in our commitment to shine brightly, illuminating the path for others.
Like MECA, Amigo Energy strives to support our Houston community. How can we better support our community moving forward?
Listening attentively to the community’s needs and encouraging open communication is the best way to offer support. Collaborating with grassroots initiatives and empowering local voices ensures our support is meaningful, sustainable, and inclusive.
