Arturo’s Childhood
Arturo’s family moved from Mexico to Houston when he was just a toddler. Arturo and his mom were born in Mexico, while his dad and brother were born in Laredo TX. Growing up in a Spanish-speaking household, he witnessed his parent’s relentless work ethic as they navigated multiple jobs to make ends meet. Despite their lack of formal education, they instilled in Arturo a strong moral compass and the value of kindness.
Arturo’s journey traces back to a defining moment in his childhood. At age 12, he sat in a courtroom as a judge rendered a life-altering sentence for his parents. They chose to perform community service as a compromise in which they could still see their children.
His mother’s community service at a local bank fascinated him, igniting a dream of becoming a banker. Simultaneously, his father’s commitment to cleaning public parks fueled his determination to rise above challenges. Their unwavering support and belief in him laid the foundation for Arturo’s extraordinary path.
Amigo Energy was privileged to sit down with Arturo and learn more about his inspirational story. Let’s journey deeper through Arturo’s narrative.
Can you describe your career journey?
In 2004, while still in college, I wrote a letter to the Market President at Bank of America, expressing my eagerness to join the banking world. My mother’s community service in banks had imprinted the environment in my mind. Starting in retail banking, my manager a great relationship with many of the bank’s commercial clients. She enlisted me in the bank’s commercial training program, where I transitioned to business banking and excelled. As a business banker, I enjoyed commercial credit risk, which led me to JP Morgan Chase. I have since progressed into leadership roles and have dedicated nearly two decades to the banking world, combining my love for people with a fascination for behavioral economics and commercial credit risk.
Although I am fortunate to have a successful career, it has its struggles. During challenging moments, I focus on positivity and purpose. I believe intention is the key to success. Rather than dwelling on my circumstances, I seek ways to create a meaningful impact. Complaints without action yield no results, so I act purposefully.
How have you used the mistakes you’ve seen others make to better your life and decisions?
I believe that adversity doesn’t define us; it’s how we respond to it that matters. I’ve always considered failure to be life’s greatest teacher. When faced with financial challenges growing up, I resolved to become proficient in managing my finances. Academic setbacks, caused by external factors, taught me to narrow my focus to what I am really good at. I shifted my perspective from dwelling on what I lacked to finding ways to create better outcomes through learning and growth.
What does your Hispanic heritage mean to you?
Hispanic heritage represents a rich tapestry of culture, tradition, and values. I endeavor to instill the significance of my heritage within my family, sharing the stories, values, and cultural roots that shape who we are. It’s essential to me that my children understand the importance of embracing their culture and the contributions it brings to our community and the world.
What does “Don’t let anything dim your light” mean to you?
It’s a powerful reminder that challenges and negativity will always exist. To keep one’s light shining, it’s essential to advocate for others and understand that the impact of our actions extend beyond our immediate surroundings. By avoiding the noise of negativity and focusing on purposeful actions, we can illuminate our path and inspire others.
What makes Houston so special?
Houston’s uniqueness lies in its incredible diversity and its ability to offer a wide spectrum of cultures and perspectives. Growing up in such a varied environment has given me a broader understanding of the world and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
How do you think communities can support immigrants?
By taking proactive initiatives to meet their needs, even before they ask for help. By offering resources and opportunities without waiting for requests, communities can make a significant impact. It’s about doing work for the community and making resources accessible for those who might not have the time or means to advocate for themselves.
