Are Energy Rates Rising in Houston?

Houston Electric Rates Have Risen Since 20022

This is where it gets tricky. The Bureau of Labor Statistics periodically publishes energy price information from the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria metropolitan area, but the rates seem to vary from year to year. Looking at the numbers, we can see that electric prices are higher now than they were in 2002. That said, home energy rates have decreased significantly since their 15-year high of around 17 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2009.2

It’s also worth noting that energy rates usually fluctuate on both a weekly and monthly basis.3 This may lead to sudden rate hikes if your light company passes those costs on to you. That’s why Amigo Energy specializes in fixed-rate plans that help you map out your expenses and manage your budget over time.

Moving to Houston

Stressed about your move to Houston? With so much to worry about, it’s easy to let some of the seemingly minor details fall through the cracks. In Texas, for example, setting up electric service is a bit more complicated because residential electricity has been deregulated.

Instead of having to settle for one utility company that controls everything from pricing to available services, you have the power to choose the right energy provider for you. Competition between light companies provides Magnolia City residents with competitive rates, better green energy product options, and more flexible contracts.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. To set up service, you’ll need to pick a Residential Electric Provider (REP), like Amigo Energy, that meets your needs.

Sounds easy enough, right? Well, hold onto your britches, it’s a little more complex than simply choosing a provider. Why? Because there are more than 240 REPs operating in Texas. That list gets a little shorter when you limit your search to Houston. But there are still a lot of options out there. At Amigo Energy, we want to make the choice less complicated for you. Here are some of the services we specialize in that help Houstonians save energy and avoid hassles:

Energy conservation options

Competitive, fixed rates

Flexible contract lengths

After you have an idea of what kind of energy service you want, what happens when you call to turn on the lights? Well, that’s not so complicated. An energy adviser will ask you for the following information:

Your new address

Whether you’re switching providers or starting new service

Your start date

After that, our energy advisor will do the following:

  • Run your credit
  • Finalize your contract
  • Contact the Transmission and Distribution Service Provider to turn on your power

Most days, if you call before 2pm CT, we can turn on your power the same day you call1

Let us ease your moving-related anxiety by getting you the right energy plan at the right price in the right time frame.

Is your current Houston electric company not meeting your needs? Is your rate inconsistent and therefore unpredictable? Are you looking to switch your service today? Well, you’re in luck because Amigo Energy makes switching electric companies quick and easy to do.

No Notification Required

From day one, your smart meter will report your energy usage to us, while your previous electric company will receive a notice to generate a final bill.

Easy transition

We notify your provider

Not only that, but it isn’t necessary to notify your current electric company that you’re switching providers. One or two days before your power is switched over, your current light company will be notified.

Get Connected in as Little as 3 Days4

And it won’t take too long to switch electric companies, either. Depending on the kind of service you’ve requested, you’ll get better service and rates within as few as three days.

No Fees to Switch

All of this is well and good, but will it cost you anything extra to switch electric companies? Rest easy—Amigo Energy doesn’t charge anything to switch your electric service to us today. Sometimes, your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP) will charge you a switch fee, but we won’t.

Don’t forget, though, that you will be responsible for paying your current electric company the balance of your last energy bill. And, if you switch light companies before the end of your current contract, you may be charged a termination fee.

Who do I call in the case of an emergency or power outage?

Call your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP). If you don’t know who your TDSP is and you live in Houston, chances are that you’ll need to call CenterPoint. Also, don’t forget that your TDSP should be listed on your bill. In either case, here are the numbers of the four TDSPs that operate in Texas:

CenterPoint: 1-800-313-4747
AEP Texas: 1-866-223-8508
